Activities in the field of urban planning are wide in scope and highly significant for the development of the country. Various processes and stakeholders' interests in urban planning require the training of highly qualified specialists who can create high-quality urban planning documentation while balancing private and public interests, aiming to establish a safe, environmentally friendly, economically efficient, and comfortable urban environment.

Basic Department «Urban Planning» is established on the basis of Scientific Research Institute of Perspective Urban Development (NII PG) to train specialists in urban design and spatial development management.

The department is a structural unit of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and part of the Institute of Civil Engineering.

Mission

Creation of advanced knowledge in the field of urban planning
and implementation of practices to ensure the sustainable spatial development.

Purpose

Practical training of students of bachelor’s, master’s
and postgraduate studies by implementing educational programs aimed
at implementation of scientific activities.

  1. Carrying out R&D works for Customers on the basis of additional agreements and contracts;

Conferences

To enhance students' professional and scientific careers, the university holds the annual All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference «Innovative Approaches in Urban Planning: Science, Education, Practice» under the patronage of Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences (RAACS) and the All-Russian Conference «Science Week of Institute of Civil Engineering».

Publications

Students are given the opportunity to publish studies in scientific journals: «Academia. Architecture and Construction», «Architecture and Construction of Russia», «Biosphere compatibility: man, region, technology», " Bulletin of BSTU named after v. G. Shukhov», «Urban Planning and Architecture», «Housing Construction», " Engineering Journal of Don», etc.

Grants

The establishment of joint scientific groups is also proposed for the implementation of research grants in the following areas:

  • Patterns and regional characteristics of territorial-spatial organization and architectural-planning formation of settlements;
  • Modeling the structural organization of residential, public, industrial, utility-warehouse, agricultural, and multifunctional areas of settlements under various biospheric conditions and climate change dynamics;
  • Scientific foundations of regulatory and legal support and control of urban planning activities, as well as monitoring the quality of the urban planning environment;
  • Historical approaches to analyzing the development processes of cities, rural settlements, and urbanized landscapes;
  • Methods for the preservation and use of urban planning and architectural heritage;
  • Methodology of urban planning analysis utilizing the latest tools and digital analytics of the morphological structure of cities.
