At Moscow Public Health Week the impact of the urban environment on the quality of life and health of the population was discussed.
The conference was organized by the Research Institute for Healthcare Organization and Medical Management of the Moscow Department of Healthcare and the N.A. Semashko National Research Institute of Public Health.
The conference brought together experts from various fields to discuss modern ideas for transforming public health and developing interdepartmental standards for designing health through the urban environment.
Pavel Spirin considered about urban environment as a determinant of public health and quality of life:
"Today, more than 75% of Russia's population lives in cities, so urban infrastructure largely determines public health. The modern pace of life, high traffic congestion, environmental factors, and a shortage of quality public spaces are causing an increase in chronic non-communicable diseases, psychoemotional disorders, and a decline in quality of life".
The presentation presented key challenges for the public health system, with special attention paid to criteria for city comfort and territorial rankings based on health indicators.
"Modern urban development should focus not only on infrastructure development but also on disease prevention. A comfortable urban environment directly impacts human health and quality of life. The key objective of sustainable development should be the transition from a 'disease treatment' model to a 'health management' model through the creation of a high-quality urban environment," noted Pavel Spirin.
